Profession of Insurance Agency

 


We started our Chartered Accountancy (CA) practice in 1990. Initially, our clients comprised friends and family. As our clientele expanded, we began receiving walk-in clients. Among the first walk-in visitors to our (home) office, drawn by our CA signboard, were LIC Development Officers. Ravikumar initially approached us and proposed a life insurance agency with LIC of India. At that time, we were not inclined to venture into the insurance agency.

A few months later, two gentlemen walked into our office, introducing themselves as Development Officers of LIC of India. Deshpande and Deshmukh had a discussion with my brother and me, presenting the opportunity of obtaining the agency for LIC of India. They explained the advantages of such an agency for us. After a couple of additional meetings to gather more information about the proposed insurance agency business, we concluded that my brother should take up an LIC agency in his name.

Gradually, over a period of time, he also registered for a general insurance agency. Over the past 20-plus years, we have gained valuable insights into the insurance agency business. I would like to share our experience.

 

An Insurance agent is a critical professional in the financial world. Their role is to help individuals and businesses protect themselves from unexpected risks. An insurance agent sells insurance policies, which act as agreements between the policyholder and the insurance company.
